What is a running header?

Updated:

A running header (or footer) is text repeated at the top or bottom of every page of a printed document, such as the book or chapter title and the page number. It is page furniture, not part of the text.

Why it matters when you convert a PDF to EPUB

In a PDF, running headers are ordinary text, so a naive converter pastes "Chapter 3 · 47" into the middle of sentences every page. EpubCC compares pages to detect text that repeats at the same place and removes it, page numbers included.

How EpubCC handles it: a short block in the top or bottom 12% of the page that repeats on at least three pages, with digits and roman numerals normalised so that "Chapter 3 · 47" and "Chapter 3 · 48" count as the same, is removed, and so is a block that is only a page number. For a short sample, the engine reads up to four pages on each side as context, so headers are detected even in a five-page sample.
