About EpubCC
EpubCC is a PDF to EPUB converter built by The 01 Company for the hard cases: columns, broken paragraphs, repeated headers, footnotes and chapters. It runs its own conversion engine, written in Rust, and publishes a benchmark that shows where it wins and where it loses.

The engine
PDFium, Google's open-source PDF library, reads each character with its position, font and size. Everything after that is our own code: reading order and columns, running headers and page numbers, paragraphs and hyphenation, footnotes, chapters and right-to-left text. The result is an EPUB 3 file.
We measured several engines before choosing this design, and every result is public, including the documents where another engine does better than ours.
Open-source licences
- We only link or ship software under permissive licences (MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD). Nothing under the GPL or AGPL is part of the product.
- PDFium: BSD-3-Clause / Apache-2.0, used unmodified.
- EPUBCheck (W3C, BSD-3-Clause) validates EPUBs in our benchmark; its messages are the source of our EPUBCheck reference.
- Ideas for reading order from OpenDataLoader PDF (Apache-2.0) are credited in the engine's notice file.
Test documents and data
The benchmark and the cases use only public-domain or openly licensed documents (CC BY, CC BY-SA), each listed with its licence. The benchmark results are published under CC BY 4.0.
Files you upload are never part of it: they are private, and never used for benchmarks or training without your explicit permission.
What we don't claim
- No converter makes a perfect EPUB from every PDF, and we don't promise one: problems we detect are shown as warnings.
- Scanned PDFs need OCR, which is not available yet.
- EpubCC is not affiliated with Amazon, Kobo, Calibre or the W3C.
| File | Deleted |
|---|---|
| Unfinished upload | 60 minutes after the last piece arrived |
| Your original PDF | As soon as the whole book is converted, or 2 hours after its last conversion |
| The EPUB | 1 hour after your first download, or 24 hours after it's ready, whichever comes first |
| Everything | Immediately, when you press “Delete now” |
FAQ
What happens to my file?
Your PDF is deleted as soon as the whole book is converted, or 2 hours after its last conversion. The EPUB is deleted 1 hour after your first download, or 24 hours after it's ready. Files are never published, and never used for benchmarks or training without your explicit permission.
Will the EPUB be perfect?
No converter can promise that, and we don't. When the engine detects problems (unreadable glyphs, doubtful reading order) it shows a warning instead of hiding it, and the sample shows you the hard parts before you pay.
