EPUBCheck OPF-011: page on both spread sides
Updated:
EPUBCheck OPF-011 is an error message: “itemref can’t have both page-spread-right and page-spread-left properties.” A spine itemref has both the page-spread-right and page-spread-left properties. They tell a reading app on which side of a two-page spread the page goes, so having both is a contradiction and EPUB forbids it.
The official message
itemref can’t have both page-spread-right and page-spread-left properties.
- Default severity
- Error. The EPUB breaks a rule of the specification and is invalid. Stores and Send to Kindle may reject it, and EPUBCheck exits with status 1.
- EPUBCheck version
- 5.4.0
Typical causes
- Properties added twice, by hand or by a tool, when setting up a fixed-layout spread.
- An itemref copied from a neighbouring page and edited without removing the old side.
- A script that appends a spread property without checking for an existing one.
How to fix it
- Open the spine in the package document and find the itemref EPUBCheck points to.
- Decide on which side the page should appear in a spread.
- Keep only that property, for example
<itemref idref="p12" properties="page-spread-left"/>, and delete the other.
When it's not this
If the spread property is on reflowable content, EPUBCheck reports OPF-100 instead.
