EPUBCheck NAV-010: nav links to a website
Updated:
EPUBCheck NAV-010 is an error message: “"…" nav must not link to remote resources; found link to "…".” A table of contents, page list or landmarks entry links to a remote resource. Links in these three navs must point to a document inside the EPUB, and EPUBCheck names the nav type and the URL it found.
The official message
"%1$s" nav must not link to remote resources; found link to "%2$s".
- Default severity
- Error. The EPUB breaks a rule of the specification and is invalid. Stores and Send to Kindle may reject it, and EPUBCheck exits with status 1.
- EPUBCheck version
- 5.4.0
%1$s, %2$s… are filled in with the file, value or element EPUBCheck found.
Typical causes
- A table of contents entry that links to a website, such as the publisher's page.
- A landmarks entry pointing to an online version of the cover or the index.
How to fix it
- Point the entry to a document in the EPUB, or a fragment in it.
- Move the web link into the content, for example on a copyright or about page, and link that page from the table of contents if needed.
- Other nav types (a custom list) may link outside the EPUB; only toc, page-list and landmarks may not.
- Rebuild the EPUB and run EPUBCheck again to confirm the message is gone.
When it's not this
If the link points inside the EPUB but to a file that is missing, that is RSC-007.
