Usage. Informative only and hidden by default: it appears when EPUBCheck runs with -u (--usage). It does not make the EPUB invalid.

Typical causes

  • A book with numbered figures or tables whose print edition had a list of illustrations or tables that was not carried into the EPUB.
  • Any EPUB that uses figure, table, audio or video elements; the note appears even when no list is wanted.

How to fix it

  1. Decide whether readers need the list; for reference and educational books it helps navigation.
  2. If so, add a nav to the navigation document with epub:type="loi" (or lot, loa, lov), an h2 heading and one link per item, each pointing to an id on the figure, table or media element.
  3. If not, nothing needs fixing: the EPUB is valid without these lists.

When it's not this

These notes never make the EPUB invalid; a missing page list when page breaks exist is the error NAV-003.
