What is KEPUB?

Updated:

KEPUB is Kobo's variant of EPUB, recognised by the .kepub.epub file extension, which Kobo devices open with their own rendering engine instead of the generic EPUB one. Kobo's own store uses it for the books it sells.

Why it matters when you convert a PDF to EPUB

A plain EPUB opens on any Kobo, so a converted PDF does not need to be a KEPUB. Some readers prefer KEPUB for the reading statistics and page-turn behaviour of Kobo's own engine; tools exist to convert an EPUB to KEPUB after the fact.

How EpubCC handles it: it writes standard EPUB files, not KEPUB. A Kobo opens them with its EPUB engine when you copy them over USB. If you prefer Kobo's own engine, convert the EPUB to KEPUB afterwards with a third-party tool; the converted text itself (rebuilt paragraphs, removed headers, linked notes) is the same in either engine.
