What is DRM (digital rights management)?
Updated:
DRM (digital rights management) is encryption that ties an e-book or PDF to an account or device so it cannot be opened elsewhere. Store-bought e-books are often protected this way.
Why it matters when you convert a PDF to EPUB
A protected or password-encrypted PDF cannot be converted: EpubCC refuses encrypted PDFs and asks you to remove the protection, which only the owner of the rights should do. The EPUBs EpubCC produces carry no DRM.
How EpubCC handles it: an encrypted or password-protected PDF fails at once with a clear message instead of being retried, and no attempt is made to break the protection: only convert files you have the right to use. The EPUBs EpubCC writes carry no DRM, and both the PDF and the EPUB are deleted on a fixed schedule (the EPUB 1 hour after its first download or 24 hours after it is ready).
