Updated:

EPUBCheck OPF-086b is a usage message: “epub:type value "…" is deprecated. Consider using … instead.” An epub:type value is deprecated; EPUBCheck names the value and its replacement. It is a usage note (shown with -u), for example "note" replaced by "footnote" or "endnote".

The official message

epub:type value "%1$s" is deprecated. Consider using %2$s instead.

Variants

  • default: a custom prefixed value
  • annoref: open annotations
  • annotation: open annotations
  • help: the "tip" property
  • marginalia: a bare "aside" element
  • note: a "footnote" or "endnote" property
  • rearnote: the "endnote" property
  • rearnotes: the "endnotes" property
  • sidebar: a bare "aside" element
  • warning: the "notice" property
Default severity
Usage. Informative only and hidden by default: it appears when EPUBCheck runs with -u (--usage). It does not make the EPUB invalid.
EPUBCheck version
5.4.0

%1$s, %2$s… are filled in with the file, value or element EPUBCheck found.

Typical causes

  • Content written for earlier versions of the EPUB structural semantics vocabulary.
  • Templates or converters that still write note, rearnote, sidebar or marginalia.
  • Notes copied from older books.

How to fix it

  1. Find the elements with the value EPUBCheck names.
  2. Replace it as suggested: note becomes footnote or endnote, rearnote becomes endnote.
  3. For sidebar and marginalia, use a plain aside element without that epub:type.

When it's not this

If the value is not in the vocabulary at all, EPUBCheck reports OPF-088.
