Source: https://epubcc.com/epubcheck/opf-096/ (updated 2026-11-04)

EPUBCheck OPF-096 is an error message: “Non-linear content must be reachable, but found no hyperlink to "…".” A document marked linear="no" in the spine is not linked from anywhere, so readers cannot reach it. Non-linear documents are skipped when paging through the book and are only reachable through links.

- Official message (EPUBCheck 5.4.0): Non-linear content must be reachable, but found no hyperlink to "%1$s".
- Default severity: Error

## Typical causes

- Notes, answers or appendices marked non-linear without a link from the text or table of contents.
- The only link to the document was removed while editing.
- A link that points to the wrong file name.

## How to fix it

1. Read the document EPUBCheck names.
2. Add a link to it from the text or from the navigation document.
3. Or remove linear="no" from its itemref if it should be read in order.

## When it's not this

If the book uses scripts, EPUBCheck reports OPF-096b instead, since a script could provide the link.
