# NAV-006: no list of figures or tables, how to fix it

Source: https://epubcc.com/epubcheck/nav-006/ (updated 2026-11-04)

EPUBCheck NAV-006 is a usage message: “Content documents contain "figure" elements but the Navigation Document does not have a listing of figures (epub:type="loi").” The content has figures, tables, audio or video, but the navigation document has no list of them. EPUBCheck shows these usage notes only with -u. NAV-006 is figures without a list of illustrations (epub:type="loi"), NAV-007 tables without a list of tables ("lot"), NAV-005 audio without "loa" and NAV-008 video without "lov". The lists are optional.

- Official message (EPUBCheck 5.4.0): Content documents contain "figure" elements but the Navigation Document does not have a listing of figures (epub:type="loi").
- Default severity: Usage

## Typical causes

- A book with numbered figures or tables whose print edition had a list of illustrations or tables that was not carried into the EPUB.
- Any EPUB that uses figure, table, audio or video elements; the note appears even when no list is wanted.

## How to fix it

1. Decide whether readers need the list; for reference and educational books it helps navigation.
2. If so, add a nav to the navigation document with epub:type="loi" (or lot, loa, lov), an h2 heading and one link per item, each pointing to an id on the figure, table or media element.
3. If not, nothing needs fixing: the EPUB is valid without these lists.

## When it's not this

These notes never make the EPUB invalid; a missing page list when page breaks exist is the error NAV-003.
